It’s that fun time of year in my office, time for annual reviews! If you’re anything like me the thought alone evokes a mix of fearful anxiety and emboldened hope. This is my one shot to learn what my boss really thinks of me and my work — for the next 12 months. Annual reviews are the closest things many of us get to report cards in the workplace.
“Manage Up” was definitely the most interesting term I encountered entering the professional world. Sure, “Circleback“, “Ping” and ”Head Down” were formiddable contenders but nothing was quite as puzzling or seemingly faulted as “Manage Up.”
I was first introduced to the term by a boss while discussing my not-so-smooth relationship with a senior colleague.
